Now, our blues is actually in 12/8 time, which means there are really three eighth notes in a beat as in:
1 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 3 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 2 - 3
So far, all our comping on the off beat has been on the third eighth note, with nothing on the second. Now, we're going to put something on the second. In the third beat in mms. 1-2 and 4-5 below, we use the following rhythm:
| 8th Note | 1 | 2 | 3 |
| Chord | - | Play | Chuck |
| Bass | Play | - | - |
Now our rhythm sounds a bit more interesting. In mms. 1-3, our comping is a little lighter. When we combine this device with guitar part from the previous page, we get the part shown in mms 4-6.
