One way to practice putting slides into your playing is to take a basic scale or lick, and to replace some of the notes with slides. The actual notes that are played are still the same, but instead of picking certain notes, we slide into them instead. In the example below, mms. 1-2 and mms 5-6 show an ascending and descending D minor pentatonic scale in which each note is picked. Each of these examples is followed in turn by the same lick, but with slides incorporated into it. In mms 3-4, each slide is performed by the first finger sliding up, while in mms. 7-8, the slides are performed by the 3rd finger sliding down.
