OK, let's start with the C chord. The voicing that you use for the C is important because it dictates how it can be embellished with little fills. Any voicing that involves a barre with the 1st finger is preferable. Why? Because it frees up your other 3 fingers to fret other notes while you hold down the others with your first finger. For this reason, we use this voicing for the C major:
This is the chord that's played in the 1st measure of the example below. Now, how can we embellish this voicing? One way is to move up and down the C major pentatonic scale (C · D · E · G · A). If you look at the four little phrases that follow the chord, every one of these notes comes from this scale. For now, let's just play one note at a time, and get them under our fingers...
